BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Kuszmider grew up in Germany where he attended Martin Luther University in Halle/S, both for his preclinical as well as clinical studies. Following graduation from Medical School, Dr. Kuszmider engaged in clinical research for his M.D. degree, which he obtained "CUM LAUDE" from Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany.
After completion of a 2 year rotating Internship, Dr. Kuszmider pursued an interest in Anesthesiology for open heart surgery at Baylor college of Medicine in Houston, Texas. After discovering Dr. Kuszmider's original interest in Psychiatry, Baylor sponsored him for Graduate studies at Columbia university in New York in order to explore the role of psychological factors in the outcome of open heart surgery. Dr. Kuszmider continued those studies by entering a 4 year Residency and "Diploma in Psychiatry" program at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
After completion of his Residency training, Dr. Kuszmider received the "Diploma in Psychiatry" from the Faculty of Graduate Studies and obtained shortly thereafter his Specialist Certification in Psychiatry of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Quebec, Canada.
Dr. Kuszmider, following a year as Clinical and Research Fellow at McGill University, went into private practice in Psychiatry in 1973 and continued unitl 1990. After moving South of the border, he held the following positions:
- Clinical Director of the Crisis Care Center in Casa Grande, Arizona.
- Acting Medical Director of the Maui community Mental Health Center in Wailuku, Maui
- Chief of the Department of Psychiatry at Maui Memorial Hospital
- Locum tenens Psychiatrist in Phoenix, Arizona.
- Staff Psychiatrist of Forensic Division of Napa State Hospital in California
- Staff Psychiatrist at St. Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco, at Alameda Medical Center in San Leandro, and at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara, California
- Locum tenens Psychiatrist at Kahi Mohala Hospital on Oahu from October 2004 to February 2006
His special interest are in the field of Mind-Body Medicine, particularly the role of emotions in health and disease, as well as the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Psychiatry. His interests evolved from his studies of Herbology and Homeopathy in Europe, Nutrition in Canada and Acupuncture at the Academy for Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing, China.
Dr. Kuszmider is a member of the Department of Complementary and Alternative medicine of the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii.
